1. Death (in your immediate family)
3. Moving home
4. Losing your job
5. Dealing with bureaucrats (at Embassies)
This is not a blog to have a go at my ex, or to complain about our stressful move from Melbourne to Mauritius, or snigger at my stressed-out boss in Dubai who fired me for asking too many questions or rant about my frustrations with Embassies worldwide.....but rather to share my 5 Favourite Ways To Deal With Stress..... never letting the external affect the internal.

#1 AN AGGRESSIVE WORKOUT:
Have you ever tried boxing, squash or a H.I.I.T. (High Intensity Interval Training) session? I love how I can yell, scream, pant, shout profanities, go really hard on the punching bag or pump those weights and let all the frustrations out. I share these sessions regularly on my Facebook page. My heart rate can be thru' the roof & my lungs maybe bursting, but my adrenalin spikes up and so do the endorphins - the feel-good hormones. #2 A RELAXING YOGA SESSION:
Some people think Yoga is for lazy people. How ignorant! Yoga is a mind-body connection.... a spiritual awakening that allows one to connect within. Throw in deep gentle stretches guided by your breath and the soothing instructions of your guru (i.e. yours truly without profanities or Humming Puppy Yoga Studio in Melbourne) and the worries can just melt away. I always finish my yoga practice feeling more calm, mindful, connected to humanity (yes, even that bureaucrat at the Embassy) and having belief that everything will work out in the end.
#3 SPEND TIME IN NATURE:
Whenever I have felt the need to "get away from it all", press the "refresh" button on myself, or pause stressful thoughts and events, I have escaped to nature. Be it sailing in Sydney, hiking in New Zealand, walking in Tuscany, skiing in Whistler, trekking in India, swimming in Seychelles, meditating in Balinese rainforests or exploring jungles in Nepal, spending time in nature is rejuvinating. The sounds of the birds, the smell of the eucalyptus tress, the lapping of the waves and the sights of never ending snow covered mountain peaks make me realize how small we are in the scheme of things and how much beauty surrounds us. All we need to do is stop worrying so much, stop getting frustrated or impatient, and just enjoy & preserve nature
#4 EAT CHOCOLATE:
I have loved chocolate since the day I was born. Living in a hostel whilst studying architecture, a Cadbury chocolate bar was my daily lunch. But I felt guilty. Moving overseas exposed me to a whole aisle of new chocolates in supermarkets.... I set the goal to try them all, not without guilt.
Then I became a Personal Trainer. I believed I had the license to eat a chocolate bar a day..... after all I was active and on my feet all day. The guilt remained....
Last year, I re-discovered dark chocolate. The healthy type - 70% and above cocoa content. Full of anti oxidants and other delicious things like coconut, goji berries and chia seeds. Just 2 small squares when I'm feeling stressed. Interestingly, since eating dark chocolate, my cravings for chocolate have dissipated.
And I don't feel guilty.
Many years ago, a famous Bollywood movie "Maine Pyaar Kiya" (I Loved You) popularized this line - "In friendship, there is No Sorry, No Thank You". This was our hero's idea of smooth flirting. He succeeded. He won the girl's heart and mine.
However, I have found the attitude of gratitude and the word "Thank you" to be so powerful, to attract more of what I want, to pull support in towards me, to bring more of the good and to always feel blessed and fortunate. During my Yoga Teacher Training in Bali, we journaled daily about things we were grateful for, something that I now encourage my clients to do.
Remember, the more we Thank about, we bring about.
